Today the Triumph Tulips division (Div. 3) include the Mendel tulips, but the Mendel's are treated separately here as well as by Hortus Bulborum.

The Mendel tulips are named after Gregor Mendel, the monk who is known as the "father of genetics." Mendel tulips were produced in 1921 by E. Krelage who crossed the very early Duc van Tol tulips with Darwins (Krelage also had been instrumental in introducing the tall, late-flowering Darwins in 1889. The Darwins now officially are included in the Single Late Division but are treated here historically as a separate Darwin Group, which corresponds with the practice of Hortus Bulborum).

Outdoors, Mendel tulips bloom somewhat later than the early tulips. Mendel tulips are slender plants with stems which are often too thin. They reach a height of 16in (40cm) and have mid-sized, slim flowers in hues of red, yellow, pink and white. Mendels are good flowers for cutting and are very suitable for the garden. The designation "(HB)" following a tulip name indicates this cultivar is in the collection of Hortus Bublorum, the authority on these tulips.
